When taken over the Shang dynasty in B.C. 1111, the Emperor Wu of the Zhou dynasty implemented a policy of taking good care of the people. This wild duck shape container with dragon motif was designed to implied that the Emperor had the responsibility to take care his own people. The design principle can be fully expressed by the resting
mother duck and baby duck. As far as the motif is concerned, the one leg curly dragon decorated on the whole ontainer and the special pattern of the ear of mother duck all carry the genre of Western Zhou dynasty. The crown shape of handle on each side of the lid implies that this is an artifact for the loyal palace for Western Zhou dynasty. The jade of this container is white jade from Hotan. The secondary crytals additives of the artifact has proved its antiquity. Judging from the available documents, this item should be the most beautiful, the earliest and largest jade container in the world. It was owned by Mr. Mei who held important positions both in the Nanjing government and the Guó Mín Dăng in the early period of the Republic of China.
